Density testing, developed by Jean-Marie Heinrich, makes it much easier for bassoonists to make reeds. While untested cane has a natural variance in terms of consistency, the density tested gouged cane is considerably more uniform in terms of hardness and playing characteristics.

This reduces the amount of discarded cane and time spent making reeds, while simultaneously increasing the quality of the reeds. We use a Rieger density tester for all density-tested cane.
